About Creator(s) of the module

Dimitris Patsalidis is a political scientist/sociologist and adult trainer specialist with a degree in Political Science and Public Administration, a Master’s in Political Science Sociology and Sociology of Education, and  a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning. Mr. Patsalidis has over 7 years experience as a manager of EU funded projects, developer of educational programs for Roma people and adult educator expert, teaching civic engagement for Roma people in Roma community centers and settlements. Apart from working in Symplexis NGO he is also scientific advisor for the Association of Greek Roma Mediators and Associates. Evangelia Mama is a Greek Roma, language and history teacher and Mediator for the Education of Roma. She has a degree of Archaeology and History of Art and works as a Mediator of education and project manager of EU funded projects for 3 years developing educational tailor made content for Roma youth and adult learners. Apart from working in Symplexis NGO Mrs. Mama is also a member of the Association of Greek Roma Mediators and Associates.

Introduction to the module

This module aims to introduce trainees/learners to the concept of European Citizenship and what's its connection to the European Democracy. At the same time, it will explain what rights arise from European Citizenship for its beneficiaries. In addition, this module will analyse the core European Values or Values of the EU, how they are established and how they are connected and what they mean for Roma and Democracy in general in Europe.

Learning goals of the module

After completing this module, the learner will be able to: understand the concept of EU Citizenship and its connection to Democracy and rights. analyze and make a list of their rights connected to the EU citizenship and explain them briefly in their own words. understand the concept of European Values, and how they are established. list and briefly analyze the core European values and how they are relevant to their everyday life. understand the importance of European values and citizenship for all citizens and to adopt a more positive attitude towards them.

Module content:

Chapter 1: What is the concept of European Citizenship and what's its connection to the European Democracy
1.1 Are Roma considered EU citizens?
Chapter 2: What rights does the European Citizenship provides you as a Roma individual?
2.1.1 Rights of all EU citizens.
2.1.2 The Core right of Free movement and residence of all EU citizens. 2.1.3Consular protection for all EU citizens.
2.1.4 Electoral rights of all EU citizens.
Chapter 3: What does the EU do for strengthening and protecting EU citizenship and its rights?

Chapter 4. What is the meaning of the European Values?
4.1 How the Roma are related to the European Values?
4.2 Core European Values-how and why they are established?
4.2.1 Human dignity
4.2.2 Freedom
4.2.3 Democracy
4.2.4 Equality
4.2.5 Rule of law
4.2.6 Human rights
4.3 Are European Values connected to Roma population and Romani culture? What can they provide them?
